When ears stick out too far from the head, they can appear oversized and the result can be embarrassing or make someone feel self-conscious. Ear pinning – also known as otoplasty – is the surgical procedure used to fix this. The ears are adjusted so as to conform more naturally to the side of the face.

Unlike most cosmetic procedures, otoplasty is most often performed on children. This is because the ears are usually fully formed around the age of four. Additionally, because ears that “stick out” can be the focus of ridicule, children are the people most often affected by the negative consequences.

However, ear pinning can be performed just as successfully on adults, too.

The cosmetic surgery procedure is fairly straightforward. A small incision is made on the back of the ear, exposing the cartilage. The cartilage is then manipulated and adjusted to form the desired shape and the ear is brought closer to the head in a more natural position. When the correct positioning is achieved, the incision is closed. The end result is ears that are more properly aligned with the contours of the face.

 

The recovery process of this cosmetic surgery procedure is equally straightforward. The head is wrapped in bandages to aid in the healing process, but most patients resume normal activity soon after the surgery. Stitches are required, but they are removed within about a week.
