Filler treatments are substances that are injected into the face in order to remove wrinkles. The substances work by raising the creases to the level of the surrounding skin. The procedure is safe, painless, fast, and often requires virtually no recovery time.

Collagen is the most popular filler substance and has been used for many years. Collagen requires skin testing for allergies and it can lose its effectiveness after several months.

Restylane and Hylaform are two more recent additions to the filler treatment market. They’re both forms of hyualuronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body. Injections of these substances into folds and wrinkles takes about 10 to 15 minutes, and is performed after the application of a topical anesthetic and ice. The results usually last six to 12 months.

Radiesse is a synthetically derived compound that has been used in Europe as a filler substance for many years. It is injected into folds and wrinkles like the other substances. Skin testing is not required.

Fat injections (also known as fat grafting) were used more frequently as a filler treatment substance before the arrival of the previously listed compounds. Fat injections require removal of fat from a donor site, elsewhere on the body, which is then injected into the area to be corrected. Today, fat injections are used to fill deep wrinkles or folds.
