Questions about Skin RejuvenationVein sclerosing, also known as sclerotherapy, is a procedure used to destroy unwanted varicose and spider veins. The treatment has been around since the 1930s and is able to eliminate an estimated 80% of varicose and spider veins with each session.
Vein sclerosing works by injecting a hardening chemical agent directly into the problem vein. Once the chemical is inside the vein, it causes the blood vessel to close up and the blood flow to be diverted to other healthy veins nearby.
Three to five sessions are generally needed to eliminate all the targeted veins, and the treated veins generally do not reappear. Other varicose veins, however, can develop over time as blood flow shifts to other nearby veins and tissue.
Sclerotherapy does cause mild discomfort when the vein is initially injected. This is very tolerable, however, and patients generally describe the sensation as a cramped or heated feeling that fades after a few minutes.
